Why I Believe What I Believe About When Life Begins and Why You Should Vote for Me Even If We Disagree

According to Genesis 2:7, "Then the Lord God formed the human of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the human became a living creature." This passage forms the basis of my belief that life begins with the breath.

When I became pregnant with my second child, it was a challenging time. I was dealing with emotional difficulties, and when I went to the clinic to confirm the pregnancy, I was shocked to learn that my due date coincided with the one-year anniversary of my 17-year-old nephew's death. The nurse kindly mentioned that there were options available to me, although I am grateful she mentioned them; I wasn’t seeking an abortion.

When it was time to give birth, the situation became urgent. The umbilical cord was around my daughter's neck, and she wasn’t breathing. The doctor gave me clear instructions, and I followed them precisely. My daughter was born and it wasn’t until the nurse finally said, "She is breathing," that I took a breath.  Those are the most amazing words to hear.

This experience reinforced my belief that life begins with the breath. However, I understand that not everyone shares this view. Regardless of our differences, what is crucial in our democracy is that no government should dictate our morality, spirituality, or religious beliefs. Our beliefs are diverse and deeply personal, and it is not the government’s role to impose a singular morality on everyone. Instead, the government should protect our individual freedoms, including the freedom to choose our beliefs.

When you elect me to the U.S. House of Representatives, I will support Reproductive Rights—the freedom to choose how and when to reproduce. Even if we disagree on when life begins, I hope we might agree that each person has the right to make that decision for themselves, free from government interference.

If you've ever experienced an early-term miscarriage, you know it can sometimes happen while on the toilet. It's not something anyone plans for, but if the pregnancy is not viable, the body often naturally expels the tissue. This process has been happening for as long as humans have existed.

During a miscarriage, the experience can be similar to having period cramps or a heavy menstrual flow, accompanied by the passing of tissue. Sitting on the toilet is a natural response to this situation. When the tissue is expelled, it doesn't resemble a baby; instead, it looks like a mass of tissue and blood.  This is a natural part of what the body does when a pregnancy isn’t viable, and it's important to understand that this process is normal.

Life begins with the breath, and the freedom to make that decision for yourself is what I stand for. This is why you should vote for me. I will work to protect your right to choose, even if we disagree on when life begins.
