It's not all about coal

I have a love-hate relationship with coal. Seeing trains hauling coal across Wyoming makes my heart happy, as it symbolizes the prosperity and industrious spirit of our country. I think of the coal miners extracting this valuable resource and the railroad workers transporting it, both contributing to our economy. However, the reality that coal is a significant pollutant and a major contributor to climate change tempers my admiration.

What excites me about the future is the potential of rare earth metals found in coal mines. These metals are crucial for modern technology and could help us transition away from coal mining. By focusing on these rare earth metals, we can reduce our reliance on coal, fostering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly industry.

Equally important is the restoration of lands affected by mining. Restoring these lands ensures they remain beneficial for Wyoming's future, supporting our ecosystem and preserving the natural beauty of our state. Emphasizing restoration and sustainable practices will allow us to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
